The Wickshire Way is about making life better by drawing us together and fostering a strong community bond. We launched the Sing Us A Song program to foster the connection between generations through song. Few things can be as powerful a catalyst for spreading joy in our community as music. We are all familiar with how effective working out each day can be to keep you in shape, but did you know listening to music exercises your brain?

From the hippocampus to the cerebellum, listening to music flexes your brain in a way nothing else can compete with. Research shows that listening to music can “reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory.” In this way, your favorite old school jams will actually keep you young! For an added challenge, listen to something current as new music keeps your brain working hard to understand any unheard melodies.

If you are looking for a boost to your next exercise session, music is proven to help there too! A British study found that music boosted walking endurance, while an American study found that music improved weightlifting. And if you are skeptical of music’s ability to get the most out of your muscles, at least we can all benefit from the fact that listening to music “led to a 28% increase in enjoyment” in walking.

So if you are looking to increase your morning productivity I say ditch the push-up routine and just put on some CCR. I’m already looking forward to my next work out!
